Part 1. In roughly 500 words, write about the podcast by doing the following:
<
<
* Summarize the life of Henry Brown (in other words, demonstrate to us that you listened
<
<
* Explain why Henry Brown’s story is more complicated than a triumphant slavery-to-freedom story. Think especially about what the author means when he says that Brown “didn’t want to be a symbol of freedom, when he could simply be free.”
<
<
In part 1, you must use evidence from the podcast, but you don’t have to use direct evidence from lectures.
<
<
Part 2. In roughly 500 words, lay out the most important pieces of evidence that the Civil War was fundamentally about slavery from the beginning.
<
<
For this second part, don’t focus too narrowly. This is a chance to show off. You will be primarily working with the lectures from Unit 6, but you should also be thinking big about the class as a whole and about how earlier developments contributed to the eruption of the Civil War. Thus a good answer would include information not only from Unit 6 but also from earlier units about, for example, westward expansion or abolitionism or the market revolution or reform movements or race or the development of slavery. You won’t be able to go into depth on these topics, but we’ll be looking for you to demonstrate that you’re processing and retaining information from the class as a whole.
<
<
In part 2, you must use evidence from all lectures in Unit 6. You should also use some relevant material from previous units.
<
<
