Your final project in this class consists of (1) picking a contemporary (ongoing) global issue or social problem of some kind that is of interest to you and that you feel lends itself to anthropological analysis; (2) conducting library research to examine it through the lens of the theoretical concepts / ethnographic approaches in social anthropology we have been learning about; and (3) writing your own analysis of the situation – describing the problem – with an argumentative call to action about potential solutions (or steps in the right direction). This should include addressing what you hope ultimately happens, but it should also address how the study of anthropology is relevant for reaching a feasible solution (or step in the right direction).
In other words, what should an applied anthropologist (as a “scholar-activist”) do? Be sure to address the “how” and the “why.” For instance, you should address questions such as: how can applied/engaged anthropological research inform a specific governing policy on this issue? Can the field be used to influence strategies of political activists on this issue? Can it be used to do things such as relieve poverty; solve conflicts, support migrants dismantle institutional racism; hold corrupt politicians accountable?, etc. [These are just some examples, but you should be creative in your own analysis based on the topic you choose!]
For this project, you will draw upon both news sources and academic sources.
