“…[T]he direct effects [of the ERA] would have been slight, but its indirect effects on both judges and legislators would probably have led in the long run to interpretations of existing laws and enactment of new laws that would have benefited women” (Mansbridge 2006: 34- 25).
INSTRUCTIONS
Based on your expertise on the waves of women’s organizing in the United States, your task is to advise the Women’s March 2023 to help craft the organization’s response the issue below. The Women’s March organization is particularly impressed with your knowledge of the political process model and the waves of women’s organizing in the U.S.
Conservative Pro-life Women. Should pro-life women be welcomed into the movement?
What specifically will you advise given your historical knowledge and understanding of women’s movements in the U.S. and the political process model of movement emergence? Will you advise those who represent the Women’s March 2023 to meaningfully include conservative pro- life women? What of the fact most of the women already in the march, who understand themselves as feminists, see the pro-choice position as central to feminism? What though does the march risk politically by not including conservative pro-life women? How is it a “women’s march” if these women, and their organizations, are excluded? Is this a place where “institutional deafness” and purity politics could harm women’s organizing? Note you are leveraging your knowledge of the historical record of women’s organizing and the political process model in your strategy paper – not just personal opinion
