text book -“Experience Human Development” textbook by Papalia & Martorell (14eth Edition).“Experience Human Development” textbook by Papalia & Martorell (14eth Edition).
This is your first discussion. It covers chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6.
You can ask your classmates a question about any topic within the first 6 chapters of our textbook including human development, forming a new life, birth or the first 3 years of life.
YOUR DISCUSSION QUESTION FOR THE CLASS:
1. Select one research study or theory from our assigned readings for each specific discussion. Develop one detailed question around it for the class. You will know that it is a research study as you will see the author’s names cited after the description of the study.
For example, you could ask the class if they, as adolescents or emerging adults, experience issues in their sleeping patterns? If so, have they noticed any unintended consequences on their thoughts, actions or behaviors?
To support this question, you could discuss the research on page 388 in your textbook e.g.:
In a recent research study, 22.5% of college students experience sleeping difficulties that they reported to be severe or moderately severe levels of insomnia (Gress-Smith, Roubinov, Andreotti, Compas & Luecken, 2015 as cited in Papalia & Martorell, 2021).
2. Explain the research study or theory that you have chosen.
3. Explain that research study or theory in the context of the general topic that it covers by discussing other research or elaborating on your chosen theory.
4. Relate that research study or theory to everyday life or a current news item. For example:
Possible reasons for changing sleep patterns and less sleep overall in adolescence include stress from family life and academia (Lund et al., 2010, as cited in Papalia & Martorell, 2021). It has also been associated with depression (Murphy & Peterson, 2015, as cited in Papalia & Martorell, 2021).
This sleep deprivation may have unintended consequences such as poorer learning skills (Horne, 200, as cited in Papalia and Martorell, 2021), impaired memory function (Lowe, Safati & Hall, 2017 as cited in Papalia & Martorell, 2021) and less clear speech (Harrison & Horne, 1997, as cited in Papalia & Martorell, 2021). It is especially interesting to consider that sleep deprivation can make a person appear like they are drunk when looking at driving patters (Elmenhorst et al., 2009, as cited in Papalia & Martorell, 2021).
5. Select an appropriate title for your post such as:
“What are the causes and effects of sleep deprivation in adolescence and emerging adulthood?”
rather than the title;
“Betty Sue’s Question for Discussion #3”.
6. Your discussion question for the class should be 3-4 paragraphs in length.
Ask your classmates a thought provoking questions that will generate a class discussion. Remember, you are asking a question that your classmates will then discuss so make sure that it is an issue that is within the scope of this course and can be reasonably discussed using the available course materials for each particular discussion i.e. childhood, adolescence, adulthood etc.
