Researched Persuasive Essay
Requirements:
Length: [5-6 full pages of text, not including a separate page(s) for
bibliography in current Modern Language Association format. Essays of
under 5 full pages will incur a deduction of one letter grade (10 points)].
MLA format (double-spaced, 1 inch margins on all sides, Times New
Roman, 10-12 point font).
Sources: at least one primary source (live, e-mail, or phone interview); six to
ten secondary sources, a minimum of which two should advocate for
opposing side of your claim. All sources need to be signed (include an
author), include attribution in the form of a signal phrase within the essay,
and come from credible sources.
In this essay you will formulate a claim related to the subject of your choice
from the list of topic choices provided. Your audience will be composed of
persons of different ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and political and
religious affiliations. As an academic researcher, you will be using evidence
from sources which your audience should find credible. These may be found
within the databases to which our Library subscribes, from a daily
newspaper or reputable news magazine online or in print, from relevant
books, from a personal interview of a qualified figure, or from an official
government or school web site or credible web sources. Should you choose
to utilize it as such, CQ Researcher alone might just lead you to almost
everything you will need for the project. Recall that evidence (as defined by
our Norton Field Guide) may be of nine different varieties. Sources must
have an author listed or be published by an organization known to be
credible, and this needs to be clarified in the text in the form of a signal
phrase/attributive tag.
Prior to the research paper, a source analysis will be written on two of the
sources you select for your paper. This short essay will be due April 8.
Steps For Persuasive Essay:
1. Select a topic from the approved listing of topics submitted in class. Do
not select a topic off this list. Select a topic you feel you will enjoy learning
more about.
2. Once you have selected your topic, formulate a working claim and post
this on Desire2Learn on the Discussion Board by 5 pm March 20. You
should be able to clarify this statement in a single sentence. Be sure to read
my feedback. It’s intended to guide you toward a manageable claim.
3. Thorough comprehension of a subject comes about best by reading about
the issue from multiple angles. Therefore, research what the strongest and
most knowledgeable parties on both sides of the issue have to say. Learning
about a topic and showing that knowledge off to our audience is key to this
paper because it lends directly to your credibility. Per the instructions above,
at least two sources you select for your essay should be from the side of the
debate opposite of yours.
4. As you begin to incorporate secondary material* into your paper, keep in
mind to avoid dropped quotes. All sources, directly or indirectly quoted,
need to fit into the paper seamlessly. Attributive tags/signal phrases,
therefore, should precede or follow quoted matter for purposes of smooth
transition. General references (encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc.), religious
tracts (Bible, etc.) do not need to be cited in a Bibliography.
5. Turnitin dot com, an originality checker, will be enabled in the Dropbox
where the essay is uploaded**. Be certain to check your report.
