New Skill Practice Reflection: (1 pages total) Reflect on how you used positive appraisal to close an open memory and cultivate past-focused positive memories. Additionally, reflect on how you skillfully savored a moment. Include a response to the following prompts for a total of 1 page double spaced.
Positive Appraisal: (1/2 Page) Think of a memory that you feel you have not fully understood or still feels bothersome and unresolved that you would be willing to practice closing as part of this assignment. Whenever you think of this memory, the experience is not pleasant and you feel you have some unfinished business associated with it. This is called an open memory. Try to pick a memory that is not associated with shame and guilt or really intense negative emotions. A few examples might be: feeling angry that your best friend didn’t stand up for you when it really mattered, feeling that a past action has been taken for granted, finding it hard to trust a partner who has been unfaithful, remembering failures of the past in a way that limits your ability to savor your accomplishments. Briefly describe this open memory and identify how you would practice one of the four positive appraisal strategies to help you close it. Of the four positive appraisal strategies, which one(s) do you find to be the most relevant to your open memory? How did you use this strategy to close the open memory? What other skills from 215 or 216 did you use to support your practice of positive appraisal? Where were you successful in closing the open memory? How did your positive appraisal practice change how you felt about the memory? What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Savoring: (1/2 page) Describe a time savored a moment. Because positive experiences can take up to 20 seconds to “register” in our brain, when did you notice the positive experience? What did you notice or appreciate? How did savoring intensify the appreciation? What mindfulness skills did you use to facilitate the practice of savoring? How did the process of savoring that experience impact your mood? How could you integrate the practice of savoring into your daily life as a regular, mood-boosting practice to help you spiral up?

Class Activity Reflection: (1.5 pages) Reflect on your experience of writing about your “Your Best Possible Self” in lecture. It may be beneficial to review the lecture and quiz section slides related to optimistic thinking and hope to help guide your response and support your thoughtful reflection. Your response for this section should be 1.5 page double spaced.
Your Best Possible Self (3/4 page) – Imagine your life 10 years from now. Visualize a future in which everything has turned out the way you wanted it. Imagine in vivid detail that you have worked hard and succeeded at accomplishing your life goals. You might think of this as reaching your full potential, hitting an important milestone, or realizing one of your life dreams. The point is not to think of unrealistic fantasies, but rather, things that are positive and attainable within reason. After you have a fairly clear image, write about the details. Writing your best possible self down helps to create a logical structure for the future and can help you move from the realm of foggy ideas and fragmented thoughts to concrete, real possibilities. What character strengths will you need to deploy to make this best possible self a reality?
Describe how the above “Best Possible Self” reflective writing exercise affected your experience of future-focused positive emotions. How did visualizing and writing about your best possible self increase your hope and optimism? Practicing hope and hopeful thinking, what “agencies” and “pathways” will help you be your best possible self? What goals do you have for yourself? How will you leverage your signature strengths and also draw on your underutilized strengths to help you be this person? How might you practice optimistic thinking help you achieve your goals?
