Popular science essay (30%)
Word length: 1200–1600 words
Topic: Song Learning (development, mechanisms, etc)
Style: classic style
Task: dig into the literature to find the research that illustrates the concept, and ultimately bring it to life in a popular science article. provide citations for at least three peer-reviewed papers. This is very much aimed at a broad audience, so should be written as popular science and meant to engage the audience. Think of writing it for your parents or a friend that’s not in biology. People that are smart, but just don’t know what you know about the topic and you want them to be as excited about it as you are. Again, this is a popular science essay, so have fun with it and use analogy/metaphor and creative language. The more you enjoy writing the piece and have fun with the subject matter (while teaching us something), the better it will be.
One of the first steps in writing is to identify your intended audience. Different audiences demand different writing styles. There are many styles of writing; as a biology student, you will have already written lab reports and research papers which are often written in what is called a “practical style.” In this writing style, the reader and the author have defined roles (supervisor/employee, teacher/student, technician/customer). The format is often prescribed, and they have a defined length. This is NOT the writing style we want you to use for this assignment.
Instead, our goal will be to write in the classic style. Steven Pinker (2014) writes:
The guiding metaphor for the classic style is seeing the world. The writer can see something that the reader has not yet noticed, and he orients the reader’s gaze so that she can see it for herself. The purpose of the writing is presentation, and its motive is disinterested truth. . . . The writer and the reader are equals, and the process of directing the reader’s gaze takes the form of a conversation. (p. 29)
Given the increasing specialization of biology, it has never been more important for biologists to write about biology for society at large. Writing about animal behaviour is a perfect opportunity to hone these skills, since many of these behaviours are ones that we have either observed or ones for which we can find parallels in human behaviour. The classic writing style (in which you will write this piece) is based on communicating with a broad audience; mastering this style will provide you with a critically important writing tool useful in all walks of life.
This is not a scientific essay; however, you must draw on the literature to provide a strong scientific basis for your essay. As such, be sure to provide citations for at least three peer-reviewed papers that you used to gain the information necessary to write your essay.
