Notes
As you’ll remember, the process of the BYU-Idaho Learning Model is Prepare, Teach One Another, and Ponder and Prove. In this assignment, we will focus on the third, especially the Ponder part.
To ponder means to take something we have experienced and reflect upon it in our mind in an attempt to find meaning. We may ponder a scripture we have read, a trial we have experienced, or a lesson we have learned. As we ponder something, we try to connect it with other things we have experienced to see how they relate. As we make connections between our varied experiences, we begin to have insights into the nature of our life and how we can live it better.
This can be as simple as thinking about a dish of food that pleases us to see if we can tell what its ingredients are or how it’s made. Or it could be as weighty as pondering a great loss or trial to see what lessons God is trying to teach us. In both cases, we take something we have experienced, reflect on it, and see what we can learn. The philosopher Socrates called this process “the examined life,” and it is essential to human progress and happiness. In this assignment, you are to write a reflective paper about the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.
