Introduction
First paragraph: Starts of broad! Presents the background information for a fellow scientist (possibly in another field) to understand why the findings of this paper are significant. This background information includes accepted theories, their histories and relevance to YOUR study. This section will include information that you gather from reading other papers, such as the ones you read and took notes on in class. These sources will be referenced in text using the APA format.
Second paragraph: Getting narrower! This next paragraph should have information on the study organism (i.e., the plant species we are studying). You must spell the organism’s name correctly and you must include the scientific name in the correct format. For example, if the Genus is Scientific and the species is name, then it should appear like this Scientific name. Notice the Genus is capitalized but the species is not; the name is also italicized. You can abbreviate this as such: S. name.
Third paragraph: Now be specific! End the Introduction with a paragraph that states your experimental approach as it relates to your stated hypothesis and the corresponding predictions. This can be in an “if…… then……” format.
Methods
Write two paragraphs of the methods that you are using for the plant competition lab. Remember to write in past tense, as though you are writing after the experiment is done. This is written in paragraph form, not a list of steps like you made to start with in the lab. Write this in order of the steps / materials you used (or saw us using in the videos). Make sure you use metric! You will also need to specify what your treatments are (in this case the three different levels of plant density) and the response variables (e.g., plant survivorship after 5 weeks) that you will measure.
References
Place your References section (with five references that you cited in the Introduction) after the Methods. You must use the APA style.
