Case Study Guidelines
This is a research project. This paper should demonstrate a significant study of the church. The paper is to be typed and include all documentation. Include exhibits with your final paper. You will also provide our class with a presentation of your study toward the end of the semester.
Select a church anywhere in the world. The goal is to get the “inside scoop” on what is going on in the church. The following methods should be used to collect information:
• Observation
• Document Search (bulletins, annual reports, published budgets, brochures, statement of faith, website, etc.)
• Interviews
Include the following in your Study:
I. What is the Ministry Context?
a. Where is the Church located (inner city, outer city, suburbs, rural?)
b. What are the demographics of the members?
i. How many attend
ii. Make-up of attendees (age, ethnicity, gender, etc.)
iii. Other interests or features that make this congregation unique.
c. What are the demographics of the community?
d. What is the specific group this church is targeting (ethnicity, age, social status, interests, niche in society, etc.)?
e. ***How is this church crafted to uniquely reach out to its target audience?
II. What is the Purpose of the Church?
a. What is the stated purpose of the church?
b. How does this purpose measure up to the Bible?
c. Do you think this church is accomplishing its stated purpose? How?
d. What is the passion of the church?
e. What do you think are the church’s core values?
f. What could this church do to better accomplish its purpose?
III. Non-Negotiables
a. Are the non-negotiables present in the church?
b. How are they practiced?
c. Is there a reason they are practiced in this way?
d. In your opinion, is there a way to make them more effective in how they are practiced? Why do you think this?
IV. History of the Church
a. Briefly sketch the history of the church (from beginning to the present).
b. How does the church’s history reflect on who they are today?
c. Do you think this is a growing, stagnant, or dying church? Why?
V. Style
a. What is the style of worship? Why did they adopt this style?
b. What is the style of preaching? Why did they adopt this style?
c. Does the style fit this congregation? Why or why not?
d. How does the style limit the church?
VI. Leadership
a. Who are the key leaders in the church (both paid and volunteer)?
b. What do these leaders do?
c. What type of church government does this church use?
d. Evaluate the effectiveness of the leadership.
VII. What are the Key Ministries in the church?
a. Give a brief summary of the key ministries.
b. Who is the target audience of each?
c. Evaluate the effectiveness of these ministries.
VIII. How does the church help believers grow?
a. What is the strategy for helping Christians to grow in their faith?
b. What is the strategy for equipping the saint to do the work of the ministry?
c. How does the church help believers get involved in using their gifts?
IX. How does the church reach out to those who do not believe?
a. What is the church’s plan for reaching out to the lost in the community?
b. How does the church serve the community?
c. What is the church’s plan for global evangelism?
X. How well does this church accomplish God’s Purposes?
a. What evidence is there that this church is fulfilling God’s purpose and making an impact in its community and around the world?
b. What are the greatest strengths of this church?
c. What are the biggest challenges to this ministry?
d. What are the future goals of the church?
e. What is your overall evaluation of the nature and purpose of this church?
Purpose of the Church
• Show the stated purpose of the Church.
• How well does this line up with what the Bible says?
• How is the church accomplishing this purpose (give specific examples).
• How could the purpose statement be improved to better reflect the Scriptural commands?
• Include photos, video, and/or key quotes, sound bytes.
Leadership of the Church
• Who are the key leaders in the church (both paid staff and volunteers)
• What does each leader do?
• From your perspective, how effective is the leadership?
• How is the church governed?
• Is each person/family in the church being shepherded? How?
• What are the strengths and weaknesses of this type of church government?
• How well are the leaders developing the next generation of leaders?
• How could the leadership be improved?
• Include photos, video, and/or key quotes, sound bytes.
Ministries of the Church
• What do you think are the key ministries of this church?
• Why do you think these are the key ministries?
• Describe the target audience of each ministry?
• How does each ministry help accomplish the purpose of the church?
• How could the ministry be improved?
• What new ministries could be developed?
• Include photos, video, and/or key quotes, sound bytes.
