Using your Time and Money
Whether or not people are required to spend their time and money on anything besides their own needs and wantS is a hotly contested topic. On the one hand, some argue that individuals are solely responsible for their well-being and should be free to use their resources as they see fit. On the other hand, others believe that individuals must contribute to the greater good and use their resources to benefit society.
In this paper, I will argue that individuals have a moral obligation to use their resources, such as time and money, for the betterment of society and not just for their own needs and desires. GOOD – YOU HAVE PROVIDED GENERAL CLARITY AS TO YOUR POSITION IN THIS ESSAY. THE NEXT QUESTION IS WHY, SPECIFICALLY, DO INDIVIDUALS HAVE SUCH AN OBLIGATION? This argument stems from the belief that we are all interconnected and that humanity’s well-being is dependent on AN individuals’ actions. Our actions and choices have a ripple effect that extends beyond ourselves and directly impacts those around us. THE IDEA THAT WE ARE INEVITABLY IMPACTING OTHERS BY OUR ACTIONS AND THEREBY HAVE A MORAL OBLIGATION TO THINK ABOUT THOSE IMPACTS, AS WELL AS THE IMPACT UPON THE WHOLE OF WHICH WE ARE A PART, MAKES SENSE. In this light, it becomes clear that our responsibilities extend beyond our personal lives and into the larger community. Furthermore, the idea that our actions impact others highlights the interdependence of society, where the well-being of the whole is connected to the activities of its members. As such, individuals have a moral obligation to contribute to the community in ways that promote the common good, using their resources for the benefit of others and not just for their gain. This obligation is not just about fulfilling duties but also about making a positive impact on the world and leaving a legacy that extends beyond our personal lives (THE LEAVING A LEGACY ANGLE IS A DIFFERENT ARGUMENT. This can take many forms, such as volunteering time to help others, donating money to charity, or participating in social and political activism. Additionally, using one’s resources for the benefit of others can bring a sense of fulfillment and purpose beyond personal satisfaction. Moreover, by investing time and money in the well-being of others, individuals can have a positive impact on the world. This can take the form of supporting organizations that provide essential services to those in need, funding research to find cures for diseases, or working to address social and environmental issues. In this way, individuals can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and leave a lasting legacy.
However, some argue that individuals should not be burdened with an obligation to use their resources for something other than their own needs and desires. They might assert that people can utilize their wealth in any way they see fit and that it is not their obligation to solve societal issues – IF ONE WERE TO MAKE THIS ARGUMENT, HOW WOULD IT RELATE EITHER TO THE IDEA THAT WE ARE ALL INTERCONNECTED OR THE IDEA THAT ONE GAINS FULFILLMENT FROM HELPING OTHERS? THE KEY IS TO MAKE SURE YOUR OBJECTION DIRECTLY ADDRESSES YOUR ARGUMENT. This argument overlooks the fact that society’s well-being is interdependent on individuals’ actions (NEW PARAGRAPH – GOING FROM AN OBJECTION TO A REBUTALL). While it is true that individuals should have the freedom to make their own choices, this freedom is not absolute. Many individuals cannot meet their basic needs, such as access to food, shelter, education, and healthcare, due to systemic barriers such as poverty, discrimination, and unequal distribution of resources (Singer, 2017). THIS COULD WORK AS A REBUTTAL TO THE NOTION THAT ONE SHOULD JUST BE ABLE TO USE HIS/HER RESOURCES AS HE/SHE SEES FIT. IT WOULD WORK IF THE POINT IS THAT THESE INEQUITIES ARE A RESULT OF INDIVIDUALS FOCUSING ON THEIR PERSONAL GOOD AS OPPOSED TO THE COMMON GOOD. These individuals are in dire need of support and assistance to overcome these challenges and improve their lives. It is essential that individuals who have the resources and means to do so step up and use their time and money to address these issues and help those in need.
In summary, people should spend their time and money on things other than their wants and needs. This obligation arises from social responsibility, the sense of fulfillment that comes from giving, and the positive impact individuals can have on the world. While freedom of choice is important, it must be balanced with a recognition of the interdependence of society and the role that individuals play in promoting the common good.
