For this week, we will apply some of the ideas we read about in Chapter 9: Photography.
Your discussion assignment for this week is to compose a photographic essay by capturing a series of 4-6 photographs with the goal of telling a story, documenting an event, or conveying a mood through photographs of your subject. You will need to have a subject and a story idea such as Dr. Ceriani in the photographic essay from LIFE Magazine by W. Eugene Smith’s “The Country Doctor”.
First, read the following original Photographic Essay (PDF) by W. Eugene Smith “WESmith_Life-CountryDoctor.pdf” that was published in LIFE Magazine on September 20, 1948. This essay contains 28 photos and was one of W. Eugene Smith’s great photo essays. It will give you an idea of what a photo essay is. Note the images and captions and the story of the time in which Smith followed Dr. Ceriani to create this photo essay. There are many other Photo essays by Smith that you may wish to search for on the web such as Minamata “Death Flow from a Pipe” and “Spanish Village” if you need additional examples of photo-essays. You can also watch this 6 min. YouTube.com on the Country Doctor. A recent movie titled “Minamata” was released in 2020 starring Johnny Depp as W. Eugene Smith. The movie documents the Minamata tragedy of the poisoning of the Japanese fishing bay and the birth defects that ensued in the early 1970’s and the LIFE photo essay “Death from a Pipe” that Smith documented.
The subject of your essay is up to you, but I want you to address the theme of “A Day in the Life” of someone. A human condition. Think about what the human condition was in “The Country Doctor” photo essay as you begin this assignment.
A Day in the Life:
This theme is meant to make you think about and examine your daily habits and activities. Think about what defines your day, what you do every day to meet the demands of your life or to find enjoyment in your life. Do you bake or cook meals? Care for family members or pets? Do you take a walk or exercise?
Think about an activity that has importance in your life and create a series of photographs with the goal of telling a story about that activity, documenting the event, include the human condition of your story, or conveying a mood.
Telling a story:
This form of a photo essay would consist of a series of photographs that show change. You may, for example, decide to tell a story about baking a cake. Your first photo may be of your subject selecting the recipe book and ingredients. Your second photo may be of your subject measuring and mixing the ingredients. Your third may be of the mixture entering the oven. Your fourth could be of your subject taking the baked cake out of the oven. Your fifth may be of frosting the cake. Each of these will show your human subject in the activity. Avoid images without your subject prominently seen as this is the “Human Condition” as portrayed in the Dr. Ceriani essay. W. Eugene Smith helps us to understand what Dr. Ceriani is going through in his daily struggle to provide care for his patients.
Documenting an Event:
This form of photo essay also works to tell a story. However, the event may not be under your control. An example could be documenting a sporting event. In this case, you may capture a series of photographs aimed at documenting the overall action of the event while also capturing more detailed moments within the game. In a way, you would be trying to show the spirit or excitement of the event through images of your subject performing the activity. Focus on one subject, a player, a coach, but make it personal.
Conveying a Mood:
This form of photo essay may not include a direct narrative. Instead your goal is to get your audience to feel the mood or emotion behind what you are documenting. Perhaps you want to communicate the sense of celebration of the homecoming or the birthday of a family member or loved one. You should choose to document the actual person or event occurring, capturing photos of the preparations, the act of decorating, the items used to decorate or prepare for the event. Maybe there is a sense of anticipation or waiting around the event so you choose to photograph yourself or another waiting nervously near a window. In either case, you are creating images of the human experience of the emotion. Showcase your subject, help us connect with them!
