Facilitation entails posting a question or questions about the readings for the
class to answer on the Discussion Board in Classes. Questions should be related to major themes
in the readings. For asynchronous classes, after each student responds online, the facilitator is
responsible for posting an answer to each response. Other students are welcome and encouraged
to respond to their classmates’ comments as well.
The goal is to have students facilitate a critical discussion of the authors’ ideas, and to use
this discussion to build on established theories in a way that helps inform our practice as
educators.
Remember, your goal is to generate and facilitate a critical discussion of the texts and to
relate the theories to practice. Please do not summarize the text during your facilitation; rather,
focus on evaluating and critiquing the authors’ ideas and their application to teaching, connecting
them to previous ideas/readings from our class and other courses you have taken, and raising
thought provoking questions that will engage the class in a discussion.
You are encouraged to include interactive activities to actively involve the class in practical
application of the theories that you advocate. I also suggest you prepare a power point or other
visual aide to help facilitate your presentation.
Some general focus questions to think about as you read, facilitate and post in response to
readings:
1) What is of value in the readings? How can it expand our understanding of education in
general? What are the implications for teaching and learning on a day to day basis?
2) What is your critique of the readings? What contradictions, assumptions, or biases are
there?
3) Where can we identify concrete examples that support or refute this theory in school
settings, in our practice, personal experience, or in society?
4) How does this historical or theoretical understanding challenge our assumptions or
preconceptions?

5) How does your past or current practice embody some aspects of the theories?
6) How can we use our understanding of the theory to improve our practice? What specific
pedagogical, curricular, or administrative practices can we employ?
7) What is missing? How can this research be taken further to be of more value?
