As mentioned in the syllabus, the discussion board entries must be genuine discussions. If you summarize what the author said or tell me things that you learned from the reading, you will get a zero in the grading rubric for fulfilling the requirements of the assignment.
The choice of topic is up to you. It may be a discussion of the reading as a whole or, preferably, one particular point raised in the reading. This week reading was about “Examples of Tafsir”
EXAMPLES
I grew up Muslim but my understanding and appreciation of Islam was limited as I did not truly understand and study my religion. I believe rediscovering Islam at a later age has greatly motivated me to learn as much as possible whether it be Quran, aqidah, fiqh, seerah, or hadith. In my experience, the west has depicted Islam in two extremes one being extremely pacifist and another being a war-mongering religion. The pacifist understanding seems to be a response to the propaganda and misinformation being spread around the west after 9/11. Readers should be wary when reading sources from scholars without proper credentials, especially regarding Fiqh rulings. This of course affects the reporting of the history of Islam. In the west, it almost seems taboo when talking about Islamic military victories. Many know of Napoleon’s military achievements yet how many are aware of Khalid ibn al-Walid (R.A.)? Arguably one of the greatest military minds in history yet often overlooked. The Battle of the Yarmuk was an incredible and almost miraculous victory for the Rashidun Caliphate and Khalid played a large role in not only this battle but in the overall expansion of the Caliphates’ territories.
The title of the Islamic golden age seems to be coined by western scholars. I and many Muslims know the real golden age of Islam was the time of the Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W.) and the salaf. Islamic history is especially diverse and extensive. There are many biases when reporting Islamic history but the story of Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W) is clear cut through Quran preservation and Hadith sciences which is a miracle.]
