For this assignment, you will compose a persuasive argumentative essay driven by a compelling thesis statement and supported by credible research. The genre of argumentative essay requires you to investigate a topic; collect, evaluate, and analyze evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a clear and direct manner. This assignment will bring together many analytical and writing skills such as writing persuasively, evaluating arguments and sources, incorporating research in your writing, developing a clear thesis, paying attention to audience, and expressing a logical progression of thoughts.
To do this you will:
Identify a debatable issue, research the issue exhaustively, and take a stance on the issue based on your findings. You will develop a strong thesis that communicates your stance, then use your cited sources and research to support your position. Your argument should appeal to a general audience of skeptical readers using pathos, logos, and ethos. You will need to use the library and/or online databases as a resource to gather background information to bolster your claims.
It is useful to envision this assignment in stages:
Choose a debatable issue that holds relevance and interest to you;
Investigate the issue by conducting extensive research;
Collect, generate, and evaluate the usability, relevance, and credibility of your sources;
Establish a position/claim on the issue (your thesis statement);
Argue for the rationality, validity, soundness, etc of your position/claim;
Utilize research to bolster your position/claim;
Invite readers from a variety of backgrounds to consider your position, utilizing rhetorical appeals and persuasive tone.
Sources
You will need a minimum of five (5) sources. All sources need to be evaluated for reliability and academic soundness. Of these sources:
Only one source can be from the Internet (meaning, published solely on the Internet, with no author, publication date, or other citation info. For example, an FAQ page for a government agency, or a message-board for a community relevant to your topic.)
At least one source must be field research (such as an interview or short survey). This component makes visible how your research impacts real people in the community. It also offers you the opportunity to gather interesting material that can easily be placed in conversation with more “traditionally” academic sources. For this component you should attempt to interview (via email or phone) a person of expertise. You may choose to interview an acquaintance or family member ONLY IF the person has direct familiarity with the issue you’re researching and their contribution directly supports your claim.
At least two of the sources must be from academic books/journals or books. For these sources you should search JSTOR, Google Scholar, the library website, etc.
Please note: If you choose to use more than five sources, you may exceed any of the above source requirements. Just make sure that each of the requirements are fulfilled. For example, if you have seven sources, you might have one field-research based source, two academic books/journals, and four Internet sources.
