1) Complete the following questions on page 268 of your textbook: #6 and #7. Please use examples from the book and bring in an outside reference to support your answers.
2) View the brief video “Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs”, and read pages 250 and 251 in your textbook. As a teacher, describe what you would do to ensure that all of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs are met for your students in your classroom. Be specific, realistic to your selected grade level, and explain what each level of Maslow’s pyramid would look like in your classroom. Keep your focus on motivation of the students. How does attitude, motivation, and emotion contribute to the success of the student.
3) Review the four brief video clips from “Stand and Deliver”, “Lean on Me”, “Dead Poet’s Society”, and “Coach Carter”. Then compare and contast the different strategies the teachers/coaches use to motivate their students. Where does this fall on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs? How will these strategies help you as a teacher? Provide some examples. Choose one of the film clips, and pretend that is you as the teacher. What would you have done differently than the teacher in the movie clip?
4) Read the article “Learned Helplessness”, and also read pages 257-259, Also, by utilizing an outside reference, create your own working definition of “learned helplessness”. Explain why Learned helplessness is a real and serious problem for your students. What can you do as a teacher to help students overcome this issue to make them successful.
